YSD Star Projector Review

At face value, the YSD star projector doesn't look like it has much to offer. But as we dive a bit deeper, you'll see that this unique galaxy has more than meets the eye. It's a surprisingly effective night light that can create a stunning display you can't help but enjoy. Here are our thoughts on some of the unit's most essential elements.

Ease of use

Let's start with the overall usability of this product. The YSD star projector is pretty straightforward when it comes to controls and ease of use. Setup is a breeze, as there are only a few components to put together. The unit does have a rechargeable battery, which requires a few hours to juice up. More on that later!

Once you have everything set up, turning the light on is as simple as pressing a button on the front. When you look at the control panel, you'll notice that this unit is very simple. The control panel is intuitive and sleek. All the buttons feature self-explanatory graphics, so you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure things out!

There are five buttons in total. They all control the various functions of the light. If you don't want to fiddle with the base unit, you can always use the remote controller. YSD's remote has all of the same core functionality. It does require a couple of batteries that aren't included with the package. But once you supply those, you can control the light from up to 32 feet away. Sit back, enjoy the show, and make adjustments without having to leave your seat!

The features of the YSD star projector are decent. This unit doesn't have super exciting additions like an audio player or smartphone integration. YSD kept things pretty simple!

You have a basic domed projector system. If you lift the cover off the dome, you'll see a series of four LED lights. The lights are pretty powerful, which helps to bring the colorful images to life. They're also strategically placed for ultimate versatility.

This is where the YSD Star Projector shines. There are only four LEDs, but the projector shines a myriad of colors. The system uses a red, blue, and green LED. In the center is a warm yellow light.

When you turn the system on, the lights will flash sporadically. The colors combine to produce non-primary colors like pink, purple, orange, and more!

Not all galaxy lights have that feature! Some are limited to the primary colors of the LEDs, which is a real bummer. The fact that YSD created a lighting system capable of mixing colors makes it a worthy competitor in the galaxy light market.

Overall, the performance o this light doesn't disappoint. The LED lights shine brightly through the included domed film. The dark parts of the film block out most of the light. The only exception is the star and moon cutouts! The resulting image is quirky and breathtaking.

Now, YSD obviously didn't go for realism here. Don't expect to be able to spot star constellation or detailed planets. It's a more artistic alternative to planetarium-style units. Whether or not that's the right choice for you all depends on personal preference.

The art style makes it a no-brainer for young kids. The shapes are easy to identify and help to create an imaginative aura rather than a mysterious one.

You can choose to set the projector to a single color or make it cycle through them all. There's also a rotating function, which causes the dome to turn slowly.

Another interesting design choice is the ability to remove the domed film. You can lift off the pattern to enjoy pure color. Without the dome, the lamp produces a vibrant glow that can fill the room! You can also choose to use just the warm yellow light. Doing so results in a standard warm glow that resembles any other lamp.

The versatility of this unit is a big perk. Several performance adjustments let you get the experience you're after!

What's In The Box?

There's not much to write home about when it comes to packaging. YSD keeps things simple. The projector is well-protected in a standard cardboard box. The good news, however, is that the package does have some attractive printing. It makes for a great gift box if you're thinking about giving the projector to a loved one!

Inside, you'll find the projector, a USB cable, the remote controller, and a small instruction manual.

The USB cable is for charging the internal battery. The projector uses a 1,200 mAh battery. It reportedly offers about 13 to 14 hours of runtime. But before you can do that, you have to charge the battery for upwards of six hours! That's a pretty long time to have to wait. Fortunately, you can keep the unit plugged in and use it while the battery charges.

One negative aspect of this model is the lack of a USB brick. You don't get a power adapter, so you must provide your own! The projector can connect to a power bank or computer. But, replenishing the battery may take even longer.

Controls & Functionality

As mentioned earlier, controlling the projector is a breeze. The control panel is easy to understand. YSD provides plenty of performance options to fine-tune the experience.

The light has a dedicated yellow light button. It produces a warm glow, providing excellent illumination if you remove the dome. Of course, you can also cycle through the other colors or set the projector to create colorful shows will all of the LEDs.

Another great feature we like is the built-in timer. This isn't a rudimentary timer with only a couple of options! YSD included a functional LCD screen on the base of the projector. There, you can set the timer and watch the minutes tick down. Best of all, you can set it for as long as you want! The timer accepts 5-minute intervals. Enjoy a quick show as short as 5 minutes. Or, set it to the 995-minute maximum. Either way, the unit will turn off once the clock hits zero to save power.

Sound Quality

The YSD star projector does not have a built-in speaker system or any music playback features. It lacks simple sound effects or white noise generators, too.

The only sound you're going to hear is the light hum of the rotating platform. Luckily, the rotation feature super loud. You might hear it at night when you're trying to sleep. Depending on your sleep preferences, that could quickly become a distraction!

However, many say that placing the projector further away will dissipate the noise quite a bit.

When it comes to construction quality and durability, the YSD star projector could be better. It's made in China and utilizes cheaper plastic materials.

Don't expect this light to hold up outside. It's an indoor-only unit.

That said, you shouldn't have any issues with normal use and good care. The housing is decently built. In fact, we like the core design. It's modern and has a supportive arc-style base. YSD also makes it in five different colors. You can get one in black, white, blue, pink, and yellow!

Customer Service & Guarantee

Here's another area where the YSD star projector suffers a bit. Because it's a smaller company, there's not a lot of information out there about YSD. You'll be hard-pressed to find a dedicated website or a reliable customer support line.

The only way to get ahold of someone at YSD is to use the seller contact system on Amazon. Representatives do answer questions through the platform pretty regularly, so that's a good sign.

Unfortunately, there isn't any concrete information about warranties or guarantees either. It seems like the only option available if things go awry is to turn to the standard Amazon return policy.

YSD Star Projector Pros & Cons

There's good and bad with most star projectors. It's important to cover all bases and display the facts both positive and negative.

  • Beautiful modern designed
  • Vibrant and colorful light system
  • Dynamic rotation and movement
  • Rechargeable battery with decent runtime
  • Flexible modes of operation
  • Adjustable timer
  • Built-in LCD screen for timer
  • Handy remote control
  • Easy to use

  • Doesn't come with a USB power adapter
  • Made entirely out of plastic
  • No guarantee or warranty

All in all, the YSD Star Projector is an exciting product that's well worth consideration. It's not perfect by any means. We would have liked to see some more modern features or some more premium materials. But, the projector's versatility and performance capabilities make up for the shortcomings.

It's an excellent galaxy light that can create a stunning show. Thanks to its high-quality light system, the lamp creates many colors to make those projections pop!
